SAVAGE SEVEN -- Event details
DATES: The third annual Savage Seven marathon event will be held on December 26, 2012
through January 1, 2013, in Orlando, FL.
LOCATION: The event was on a track for the first two years, but I anticipate enough runners this year that
a track would be too congested. Extending the distance of each lap up to close to a half mile should
relieve the congestion, and also provide just slight difference in elevation, which I believe is
not quite as hard as a completely flat surface.
This year, the race will be held in the parking lot of Winter Springs High School, Winter Park, FL. This school
is at the end of Tuskawilla Road, where it intersects with SR 434. More detailed directions are on the LOCATION page.
START TIME: The start time will be 6:00 am each day, with an 8-hour time limit.
As of this writing--August 21, 2012--there will be no early starts.
COURSE: We have created a course of about a half mile by going around the outside perimeter of the parking
lot. There will be plenty of parking on the inside of the race
course, but PLEASE be careful of runners during the race. The aid station and portable toilets will also be located
in the infield.
FINISHERS MEDALS: Yes, each runners will get a finisher's medal for each day completed. There will be a
special medal for those runners who finish all seven days.
DRINKS AND SNACKS: We will try to have enough variety of beverages and snacks to please everyone, and
we plan to be consistent from day to day so you'll know what to expect. If you have any special requests,
please contact me well in advance.
LAP COUNTING: Laps will be counted by volunteers. It will be the runner's responsibiity to call out name and number
each time he comes by the lap counter, and he should listen to hear his name and number repeated back to him.
What, no clickers this year? Alumni from last year will wonder how we can possibly keep going in the
absence of remarks such as, "Did you remember to click?", or "I think I missed the last lap so I'll click twice this time,"
or "I'll go an extra lap just to be sure." There are rumors that one runner ran extra laps every single day.
Nostalgia notwithstanding, I've asked for high school students to volunteer in return for a donation to his or her team,
club, or other organization. The response has been good.
REGISTRATION: Registration is now open. Click on REGISTRATION above to download application. (A list of entrants
also appears on this page.) If you have questions, please send a request to SavageSevenRD@gmail.com.
FINE PRINT: Keep in mind that the Savage Seven is exactly what the name says: exactly one marathon per day for
seven consecutive days. For those who just can't get enough, you're welcome to arrange as many additional
events as you like. Come on down and run every day in December if you want. However, I cannot plan these
"extra" events.
This event is intended to have the credibility of an official marathon, meaning we meet some basic criteria.
Also, after November 1, there will be no refunds issued.
Lastly, I welcome your suggestions/comments. Please shoot me an email at SavageSevenRD@gmail.com.
Yours humbly,
Bettie Wailes
