WELCOME TO THE SAVAGE SEVEN

12/24/12: Last minute info. I'm getting excited. I hope you are, too.

  • We have everything in place. You may pick up your bib at 5:30 on Wednesday at the race site, or on your first day.
  • For those of you running more than one day, KEEP YOUR BIB. You will be issued only one number.
  • We will have bright yellow directional signs near the race site. I hope they are visible in the dark. You may park near the POD.
  • It is YOUR responsibility to call out your number to the lap counters. We will have two, just for back-up. When you pass a lap counter, call out your number and listen to hear it repeated back to you.
  • There is a McDonald's near the intersection of Red Bug Lake Road and Tuskawilla Road that is a 24-hour store.

11/26/12: Four updates:
1) The location is Winter Springs High School, 130 Tuskawilla Road, Winter Springs, FL 32708.
2) As of now, we don't have enough people registered to pay for timing mats. The current plan is to have volunteers handcount laps.
3) We have quite a few volunteers, but the offer still stands to volunteer one day, run one day for free.
4) The McDonald's near the entrance to the school opens its drive-through at 5:00 every day except Sunday. Good news for those who like to start with oatmeal (my favorite) or other breakfast.

Welcome to the Savage Seven, so named in honor of the person who first thought of this insane-but-increasingly-popular event, Chuck Savage, of Ocala, FL. His name will be forever enshrined in marathoning history.

The third annual Savage Seven marathon event will be held on December 26, 2012 through January 1, 2013, in Orlando, FL.

In case you found yourself here by mistake, and you have no idea what we're talking about, this now-annual event is a 7-day affair, during which some truly demented people will attempt to complete one full marathon a day for seven consecutive days, beginning the day after Christmas, and ending on January 1. Click on the HISTORY button above to read how it all got started.

I won't promise all the niceties that my immediate predecessor--the talented Cheryl Murdock--did last year in Pensacola. However, I will do my best to put on a fun event this year in the Orlando area. I've located a nearby high school whose parking lot provides a loop of about 1/2 mile, with slight changes in elevation. Fewer loops, less crowding, still in sight of everyone. (Smile.)

LAP COUNTING: We will have volunteers count laps for us. The plan is for each runner to call out his name and number to each of two lap counters, and listen to hear it repeated back. I've found a group of students, and several of their parents, in a local high school's theater department who are eager to some out and help us. I haven't meet them in person yet, but online they seem like a great group. I expect them to add to the fun of our event. According to my GPS, the lap distance is about a half mile, so the number of laps will be approximately 53. This should be easier for lap counters than quarter-mile laps.

Keep in mind that the Savage Seven is exactly what the name says: exactly one marathon per day for seven consecutive days. For those who just can't get enough, you're welcome to arrange as many additional events as you like. Come on down and run every day in December if you want. We have some great running trails here, which I'd be happy to show you. However, I cannot plan these "extra" events.

This event will meet all the criteria of an official marathon:

  • There is an official race director.
  • The event is advertised at least one month in advance (so that everyone has an equal opportunity to participate).
  • There will be the required number of starters and finishers (5/3).
  • The course will be guaranteed to be marathon distance. We hope to have it certified.
  • Each finisher will get a finisher's medal.
  • The results will be published.
Fees are as shown in the table below:

Dates: Full week (7 days): Per single day:
Before September 15, 2012: $370 $65
Before November 1, 2012: $400 $70
After November 1, 2012: $440 $80

Also, after November 1, there will be no refunds issued.

Lastly, I welcome your suggestions, comments, or requests. Please send an email to SavageSevenRD@gmail.com.
